Rust doesn't wait for a convenient time. Parts that look perfect on the shipping dock can show corrosion after a few weeks in a humid warehouse or a long ride in a trailer that goes from cold to warm. VCI paper is one of the simplest ways to prevent that.
What VCI means
VCI stands for vapor corrosion inhibitor, also known as volatile corrosion inhibitor. Both names describe the same thing. The paper (or poly film) is treated with chemistry that slowly releases a vapor. Inside a wrapped or enclosed package, that vapor spreads and settles on metal surfaces, forming a very thin protective layer that helps stop the corrosion process before it starts.
Why manufacturers use it
- It's clean. Unlike rust-preventive oils, there's usually nothing to wipe or wash off before the part is used.
- It reaches hard spots. Because the protection travels as a vapor, it can reach recesses and surfaces the paper doesn't directly touch.
- It does two jobs. VCI paper still cushions and separates parts like any other interleaving paper.
VCI paper or VCI poly?
Both carry the same basic protection. VCI paper is great for interleaving, wrapping and lining. VCI poly adds a moisture barrier and can be formed into bags, covers and wraps for larger parts and coils. We convert both.
Getting the most out of VCI
- Start clean and dry. VCI prevents corrosion; it doesn't remove rust, moisture or residue that's already on the part.
- Keep the package closed. The vapor works best in an enclosed space. Wrap fully or close the container.
- Keep it close. The nearer the VCI material is to the metal, the better the protection.
- Store unused VCI properly. Keep rolls and sheets sealed until use so the inhibitor doesn't escape early.
- Match it to your metal. Different VCI formulas are made for steel, aluminum or mixed metals. Tell us what you're protecting.
Sized to your parts
VCI works best when it fits the job. We slit VCI to the width you need, sheet it to your part size or die-cut it to fit, so your team isn't cutting material by hand on the floor. Send us your part dimensions and how you pack them, and we'll recommend a format.
