5 Signs Your Coil or Sheet Protection Isn't Working

Scuffs, stains, rust and torn wrap are all clues. Here's what each one usually means and what to try instead.

Protective packaging only gets noticed when it fails. If any of these problems show up on your dock or in customer complaints, it's worth taking a fresh look at the material and format you're using.

1. Scuffs and scratches between sheets

What it usually means: the interleaving is too rough, too thin or shifting during handling, or sheets are touching where the paper doesn't fully cover them.

What to try: a smoother, cleaner interleave such as glass interleave paper, sheets sized to fully cover the part, or a heavier sheet for edge protection.

2. Stains or marks on finished surfaces

What it usually means: something in or on the paper is reacting with the surface, or moisture is trapped between the paper and the part.

What to try: a low-contaminant interleave made for sensitive finishes, and packing parts fully dry.

3. Rust showing up in storage or on arrival

What it usually means: parts are exposed to humidity or temperature swings with no corrosion protection.

What to try: VCI paper or VCI poly, with parts clean and dry when packed and the package kept as closed as possible.

4. Torn, punctured or shredded wrap

What it usually means: the wrap isn't tough enough for sharp edges, heavy coils or outdoor and long-haul transport.

What to try: poly woven for heavy-duty, tear-resistant protection, or corrugated poly and linerboard pads at contact points.

5. Damaged bottom layers and crushed edges

What it usually means: loads aren't separated or supported well on the pallet.

What to try: skid runners, slip sheets and layer pads made from SBS, linerboard, chipboard or corrugated poly, cut to your pallet and part sizes.
